Return XXII:
Identity and Belonging in a Nomadic World

A life online, a life in this city and that city. This is the new normal, and we're immensely privileged to be a part of it. Communities are growing more diverse, dispersed, online, offline, multi-local, and global. We are at the forefront of these changes, and recognize that this is transforming our concepts of personal identity, home, spirituality, and community. Some of the questions we will explore include:

  • How do we define ourselves without the traditional markers of location and race?

  • How can we create tools to help those who feel alone and lost?

  • What is the connective tissue of this culture?

  • How can we lead our companies and communities into the future?

  • What are the philosophies and forces that got us here?

What is a Return gathering?

This is not a traditional conference where speakers serve as magnets to draw other attendees. This time it’s designed for you, and by you. You have been hand-selected for your role within this movement, your participation in this community, and your unique ability to influence and create.

Through this intimate group experience, we’ll enrich our personal perspectives and expand our awareness of how to advance culture by bringing people together who share the same values and vision. We will explore the unique influences, philosophies and technologies that are shaping this culture. Together, we’ll come to a new understanding of how we got here, explore where things might be heading next, and help each of us understand what’s next.

Attendance is by invitation only.

About Zunya

Zūnya is a regenerative living method, a 2.0 version of an ecovillage, using tools such as arts, science, technology, sustainability, and spirituality to enhance our way of living as we reconnect with nature, ourselves, and each other. You will join a collective of individuals from various backgrounds and origins in the process of co-creating a new way of life. Your visit is an invitation to join the family and embark on this journey.

You will be immersed in a 33 hectares of untouched jungle sanctuary. Zūnya is hidden away from prying eyes in the town of Malpaís, a secluded spot on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. This region is one of only five blue zones in the world. Malpaís prides itself on its amazing surf and its decadent mix of unspoiled beaches, private coves, waterfalls, and dense rainforests. The town of Malpaís is the perfect hideaway for those looking to discover an authentic Costa Rica.

About Return

Return was born in 2012 as a partnership with the Esalen Institute in Big Sur California to organize the leaders of the current human potential & cultural movement. Esalen invited Return the use of the land and story to act as a catalyst for this work.

Return is an ongoing effort to help make tangible the palpable, yet difficult to articulate, global cultural movement. This culture and movement was born by the convergence of eastern and western world views of the early to mid 20th century. It has been expedited by the development of the internet, the quick expansion of global communications networks, and enhanced by global travel.

Return has convened conversations with thought and industry pioneers from The Religion of No Religion, Myth Creation, Nomadic Communities, The Attention Economy, Decentralized Currency, Relationships and Sexuality, Ritual and Identity, and everything in between. Return has hosted Fortune 10 company founders, shamans, technologists, philosophers, policy makers, artists, movement builders and everyone in between.
